The invention relates to a method for producing a multilayer coating, in which an aqueous transparent top coating composition is used which contains a polyacrylate resin as a binder. The polyacrylate resin can be obtained by adding a carboxyl group-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a1) and a mixture (b) of carboxyl group-free (meth) acrylic acid esters and hydroxyl group-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in succession or in portions to an organic solvent and polymerizing in the presence of a radical initiator and after the polymerization, the polyacrylate resin obtained is neutralized and dispersed in water. The types and amounts of (a1) and (b) are selected so that the polyacrylate resin has a hydroxyl number from 40 to 200, an acid number from 20 to 100 and a glass transition temperature (TG) from -40 ° C. to + 60 ° C.
