Device for transforming an initial image (1) into a final image (8), with nonlinear amplification of point light intensities. This device comprises a point-by-point transparent optical component (6) possessing at each point a variable transparency dependent on the luminous intensity reaching this point, and a control circuit (7) controlling the operation of the optical component (6) uniformly over the whole of its surface, the initial image (1) being formed on or a short distance from this optical component (6) and the rays (3,5) forming the initial image (1) crossing the said optical component (6), in such a way that the luminous intensities (2,4) of the points of the initial image (1) are nonlinearly amplified, leading to the formation of a final image (8), for which the contrasts between the luminous intensities of two points (9,11) differ from those between the two corresponding points (2,4) of the initial image (1).
