In order to obtain, in a process for preparing domestic refuse and bulky refuse for incineration, at the same time the highest possible calorific value, good burning behaviour and low flue gas pollution, the domestic refuse is passed through a manual sorting station and a screening drum before it is combined with the comminuted bulky refuse. The overflow from the screening drum is then passed together with the comminuted bulky refuse through an Fe selector and the screenings are passed through a further Fe selector. With insertion of a composting station in the screenings path, the material streams thus prepared are homogenised in a mixer located upstream of the actual combustion chamber.
