A hydraulic shock absorber comprises a cylinder body (1) having an upper cylinder chamber (2) and a lower cylinder chamber (3) filled with oil (0), upper and lower pistons (5,6) with piston rings (10), upper and lower cover plates (7,8) with packing rings (11), and a bypass conduit (4) cmmunicating the upper cylinder chamber with the lower cylinder chamber via bypass holes (2-1,3-1) formed in the cylinder body. The upper cylinder chamber is formed in a large diam. (L) and a short length (h), and the lower cylinder chamber formed in a small diam. (l) and a longer length (H).
