Precipitated amorphous titanium oxide powder and barium oxide or strontium by hydrolysis of titanium alcoholate in the presence of oxide, hydroxide or alkoxide of barium or strontium and an acidic organic compound containing more than 6 carbon atoms, and the amorphous powder is heated by treating it with a gas stream containing water vapor, ammonia or CO2 to crystallize the barium titanate or strontium and distilling the organic acid compound. Crystalline barium titanate or strontium are of dimensions less than one micron and angular morphology, irregular.
