A hydrostatic steering system for motor vehicles is provided with a power-steering pump (3) with a hand pump (5) which is actuated from a steering wheel (6) and with a control valve (1) for distributing the pressure medium to two operating circuits of a steering motor with a steering cylinder (11) which is blocked in the neutral position. In the circuit of the pressure lines (9, 10) for the steering cylinder (11), a spring-loaded safety valve device for protecting against carriageway-side shocks is arranged.
