The process entails distillation, in particular, for removal of polyhalogenated aromatic and other cyclic compounds, such as HCH, PCB, PCDF, PCDD, in which the waste water, after adjustment of the pH to an acidic or alkaline range, is fractionated in at least one vaporiser stage into vapours and a distillation residue so that at least a part of the volatile load is removed by distillation with the vapours, and the distillation residue is supersaturated in at least one of the constituents; the vapours are condensed and after-treated in a condenser and/or in subsequent vaporiser stages, and the supersaturated distillation residue is drawn off at least in part from the vaporiser stage and subjected to a separation-out of solids, and the clear liquid from which solids have been removed is returned to the vaporiser stage.
