In this method for forming a composite layer on the surface of an aluminum alloy substrate, a powder mixture, containing a powder of a ceramic carbide of a metal and a metallic powder containing silicon and a metal element which forms an inter metallic compound with silicon, is disposed upon the surface of the aluminum alloy substrate. This powder mixture is then irradiated with a laser, so that the metallic powder in it is melted and fused together with a surface portion of the aluminum alloy substrate, so that these two are alloyed together. The powder mixture may be a powder of an alloy of silicon and the metal element which forms an inter metallic compound with silicon, or alternatively may be a mixture of a powder of silicon and a powder of the metal element which forms an inter metallic compound with silicon. The metal element which forms an inter metallic compound with silicon may be copper or may be molybdenum; and the ceramic carbide of a metal may be titanium carbide or may be molybdenum carbide.
