The invention describes a process and an apparatus having limited time and particle size resolution for determining the concentration of dust, in particular wood dust, in the air breathed in places of work, with a complete fractionation of the coarse dust and a resolution in each case of the concentration of the coarse dust using an apparatus which comprises individual impactors for the dust fraction and a virtual impactor for enriching the coarse dust, and is used for the photometric determination of the coarse and fine dust population.
