A process for the simultaneous removal of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from flue gases by means of electron beams and addition of alkaline reagent, characterized in that the flue gas having been conditioned only with respect to temperature and water contents and having velocities as usual in flue gas channels of up to 20 m/s a) is accelerated in the irradiation chamber to velocities in excess of 20 m/s, and preferably in excess of 25 m/s and is bombarded with electron beams having accelerating voltages of below 400 kV, b) the alkaline reagent is added thereto, preferably immediately after the irradiation, and c) solid reaction products are formed from the resulting mixture at velocities of from 5 to 15 m/s in a reaction volume and are subsequently precipitated.
