According to the invention, the course of the power cable between the supply (feed) terminal and an accessible terminal is determined. One of the terminals of the load (50) is connected to the accessible phase-conducting terminal of the cable, and the magnitude of the electromagnetic field indensity is measured over a surface and the points which have an extreme value for the field intensity are connected to one another. The other terminal of the load (50) is connected to the accessible terminal of a further phase conductor, or connected in a manner known per se to the accessible terminal of the neutral conductor. A series resonant circuit (51) tuned to at most the seventh, expediently the fifth harmonic of the frequency of the alternating voltage is used as the load. In the measurement of the electromagnetic field, the harmonic component of the electromagnetic field excited by the current flowing through the resonant circuit (51) is measured. IMAGE
