An electric continuous-flow heater (2) for a drinks preparation machine, which heater contains at least one heating apparatus (8) and at least one water channel (12) having a height difference between the water inlet (14) and the water outlet (16) and serving for heating water. In the installed state of the continuous-flow heater (2), the water channel (12) extends essentially horizontally and has a water inlet (22), being in connection with the water tank situated at a higher level compared to the continuous-flow heater, and a water outlet (24) being in connection with an outflow pipe situated at a higher level compared to the continuous-flow heater (2). When the water is heated in the continuous-flow heater (2), the water is conveyed from the water tank to the outflow pipe with particularly good utilisation of the heating energy. The arrangement likewise prevents residual water from remaining in the continuous-flow heater (2) after completion of the brewing operation. IMAGE
