A gapping machine operating in cycles to introduce a gap into a long chain of slide fasteners, having a gapping device which has a guide channel for the chain of slide fasteners, a clamping device for fixing the chain of slide fasteners during gapping, and a gapping tool which is moved up and down, having a control device and a transporting device for transporting the chain of slide fasteners through the gapping machine. The control device controls the gapping device and the transporting device in cyclic operation. The transporting device has on one side ahead of the gapping device in the transporting direction a feed for the chain of slide fasteners with a stop-go compensating loop of the chain of slide fasteners, which loop is loaded by a prestressing weight and, between the compensating loop and the gapping device, a measuring roll for measuring the transported length of the chain of slide fasteners, which measuring roll is carried along by the chain of slide fasteners. The measurement provided by the measuring roll is introduced as an actual length value into an actual-value / reference-value comparator of the control device. The transporting device has at the other end, after the gapping device in the transporting direction, a drawing-off device, operating on the chain of slide fasteners provided with the gap, with a stepping motor which can be controlled by the actual-value / reference-value comparator.
