A method for increasing the resolution of an A/D converter is described which converts an analog input signal value into a corresponding digital output signal value. When a conversion process is carried out, a comparison between the analog value to be converted and an analog signal corresponding to a predetermined digital signal and passing through a predetermined range of values in the course of a conversion cycle is carried out in the converter. When the method is used, a number of conversion cycles are carried out and the digital values obtained in each case are stored. In addition, the frequencies of occurrence of the individual digital values are stored. The curve of the statistical distribution of the stored digital values is calculated using the stored frequencies. The digital value corresponding to the peak of the calculated curve is taken as the digital output value to be generated.
