The invention is concerned with a method of generating shock waves intracorporally as a result of a laser-induced break-through in a suitable rinsing medium for the purpose of crushing objects with a laser beam transmitted by a light guide, the laser beam being focussed on a break-through point located in front of the light guide head by means of a lens-shaped light guide head, the distance (B) of the focus (F) of the light guide head (21) for the laser beams and hence the laser-induced break-through point being varied and adjusted by variation of the refractive index (n2) of the rinsing medium (4) surrounding the light guide head (21).
