The invention relates to a method and a device for the metered irradiation of biological tissues with laser beams in the region of an operative field. It is the aim of the invention to enable the treating surgeon to concentrate as far as possible on the actual operation and to keep a constant survey of the course of the operation in order to aid his decision-making. For this purpose, the operative field is photographed with a camera (17) before the start of the operation and depicted on a monitor as a reference image (41). The reference image is broken up into part-regions (44), each of which is allocated dose values (D1, D2) to be reached. During the operation, the field just irradiated is also photographed and depicted as an image. In addition, it is determined whether the specified dose has already been reached in the individual part-regions. The intensity of the laser radiation is automatically controlled on the basis of the results of the image evaluation, it being ensured that already treated part-regions cannot be irradiated again.
