The invention relates to a method for the reduction of the spectral line width of the light emitted by excited gas ions. The invention is based on the object of developing a method with which it is possible to register excitation spectra with minimum line width. The object is achieved by measuring the intensity of the scattered light only within a short measuring interval, during which the amount of the voltage applied to the ion trap is small compared with the amount of the maximum voltage applied.
