A pipe-line (2) especially one made of concrete, is laid on the floor of a trench (3) on a bed of loose material. This loose material (1) is then compacted by a tamping tool (4) to the same degree of compaction as the surrounding tool. The tamping tool (4) has a head with sides inclined at an angle of between 60 and 90 degrees. This type of tamping tool ensures that the loose material underneath the pipe is thoroughly compacted and that the pipe is supported over the whole of its under surface.
