In the system, a combination of a catalytic heat effect sensor (3) and a similar component (13) with no catalytic reaction to exhaust gas which is thermally insulated w.r.t. the sensor, is arranged in the exhaust system of an engine. The signal produced oy the two components are compared and the degree of completeness of the oxygen-fuel-gas reaction is determined from the measured temp. differences. The gas reaction probe is based on carbon dust combustion. USE/ADVANTAGE - For determining compsn. of exhaust gas of internal combustion engine. Rapidly reacting sensor enables individual engine cylinder monitoring.
