The invention relates to a method for controlling the reduced pressure characteristics of a medical aspiration device working with a suction phase and a relaxation phase, which comprises a suction and venting line extending between the aspiration device and a liquid collection vessel provided with an aspirator, in which introduction of air into the venting line and hence into the aspirator is blocked and/or adjustable or metered in a firmly predetermined manner at the end of the suction phase of the pump unit of the aspiration device and at the start of the relaxation phase until a freely selectable point in time but before the end of the relaxation phase. By this means, the corresponding device can be produced with little economic expenditure and space requirement and at the same time meets at least the same requirements as regards response, adjustability and functional reliability as the conventional devices, and permits reliable control of the reduced pressure characteristics even without use of mechanically scanned curve shape discs whose shape data correspond to the particular reduced pressure characteristics desired.
