According to Recommendation 1.430, each terminal equipment unit (TE) is connected to the forward line (11) and the return line (12) of an S bus. The terminal equipment units (TE) receive a frame clock via an input amplifier (22), regenerate this frame clock and extract the data to be received from the frames. At the same time, they send out data in frame form to the return line (12) via the output amplifier (40). The frames sent out are delayed by 2 bit compared with the received frames by means of a delay unit (30). A time shifting unit (32) causes an additional delay or a shortening of time by means of which signal smearing due to the signal transmit times on the return line (12) is reduced. A control unit (34) and an input stage (42) connected to the output amplifier (40) and the return line (12) determine the optimum time displacement for each terminal equipment unit and adjust it in the time shifting unit (32).
