In the prodn. of osteo-inductive bone substitute material (I) based on substances (II) contg. Ca phosphate, the novelty is that a bio-active bone replacement material (III) contg. (II), which has OH and/or silane gps. on its surface, is treated with prostaglandin of the E series (PGE) or its derivs. and/or a stabilised form of PGE. The OH ions on the surface of (III) are obtd. by treatment with a base free from toxic components, pref. NaOH, KOH or esp. Ca(OH)2. (III) with silane gps. are obtd. by treatment with a biocompatible silane coupling agent of formula R1O-Si(OR2)(OR3)-(CH2)n-R4 (IV), R1-3 independently are 1-5C alkyl, pref. Et, n is 1-5, R4 is -NH2, -COOH or -CH(O)-CH-R5, R5 is 1-5C alkyl, pref. gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and/or glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane. (II) is alpha- or beta-Ca3(PO4)2 (TCP), hydroxyapatite, glass ceramics and their mixts. and surface-modified forms, pref. TCP or an inorganic-organic composite, in which the organic material is a biocompatible polyurethane, monomer-free epoxidised polymeric hydrocarbon, polyhydroxybutyric acid, polylactate or polycarboxylate. (I) releases more Ca than (III). (II) pref. is particulate and resorbable, pref. with a particle size of 63-1000 esp. 63-500 microns or not resorbable. The prostaglandin pref. is PGE1, PGE2 or their derivs. or stabilised forms. Silanised (III) is activated, pref. by treatment with a glutardialdehyde soln. for several hrs., before treatment with PG. The prod. treated with PGE is given a biocompatible coating esp. polyhydroxybutyric acid and/or mixed with biocompatible resorbable organic materials (1-40 wt.%) pref. lactates, polyurethane or esp. collagen, untreated material and/or free PGE and/or its derivs. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for correcting bone defects etc. in all surgical disciplines, including orthopaedics, traumatology and stomatology.
