In a first step the ripple is separated from the remainder of the fundamental frequency characteristic by forming the difference between the measured fundmental frequency characteristic and a generated smoothed fundamental frequency characteristic. In a second step the ripple generated in the first step is compared with the measured characteristic. The comparison involves finding regions of approximately linear rise or fall in the measured characteristic and determining and displaying an integral value of the ripple generated in the first step, e.g. the standard deviation, over the identified region.
