The use of rice oil as a skin protectant is claimed. Rice oil, maize germ oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, soya oil, avocado oil, linseed oil, olive oil, caster oil and arachis oil were tested for their effectiveness against the blistering, reddening and swelling induced by application of a 5% aqueous solution of sodium lauryl sulphate to the skin of rabbits. The oils were applied 3 times daily for 2 days prior to the sodium lauryl sulphate treatment. Only rice oil suppressed the skin reaction. USE - Rice oil can be used alone or in combination with conventional cosmetic agents as a protective agent against skin disfigurements such as folds and wrinkles and to protect the skin against atmospheric pollution such as automobile exhausts, dry air, climatic factors such as cold, heat, excessive irradiation by the sun, and artificial tanning.
