Monitoring the quality of an die cast metal part consists of recording the ultrasonic emissions from the casting mould as it is filled with liq. metal using a sonic microphone, removing the sonic signals which do not exceed a predetermined threshold valve, graphically summing the impulses and comparing the pattern with that of a sound die casting process. USE/ADVANTAGE - Detecting faults in casting. The ultrasonic emission pattern indicates immediately whether the casting is sound (fig.2) or faulty fig.3).
