A mounting for testing tyres holds the trye on a rotating wheel and has a drum or belt type flexible wed ehich is an endless run-ning device to simulate the road surface; the wheel or device has a variable speed drive by an hydraulic or electric motor. The wheel or device is coupled to a pump or generator of the same type -hydraulic or electric-as the drive, by this system the wheel or device can be braked with different torques to simulate traction stresses, and the drive energy (hydraulic or electric) during braking can be fed back at least partly and indirectly to the motor as drive energy. ADVANTAGE - The system provides tests which closely resemble service conditions but which consume low energy.
