Alpha-alkyl lactones of general formula (1) where R1-R6 and R' each = H or 1-20C hydrocarbons n = 0 or 1 are prepd. by reaction of an alpha-acyl lactone of general formula (11) where R = 1-8C alkyl with an aldehyde of general formula (111) R'CHO and an alkali metal hydroxide, to form an alpha-alkylidene-lactone, which is then reduced to form (1).
