A rotating part (1) is illuminated by a light source (2). The shadow of the rotating part (1) falls on a differential photodetector (5). A sinusoidal output voltage occurs at the output of the differential photodetector (5). The positive and the negative extreme values of the sinusoidal output voltage are stored in an evaluation device (8). The difference between the positive and the negative voltage is formed in the evaluation device (8). The difference is proportional to the radial shock of the rotating part (1). It is displayed in length units in the display device (9). In the same manner, the axial shock of rotating parts can be measured.
