An instrument for measuring the respiratory capacity (pneumotachometer), consisting of a housing (1, 12) having two openings (14, 11) for the inlet and outlet of expired air, as well as a spring-loaded swivel arm (3), which is mounted rotatably in the housing and can be moved by the tidal air and whose swivel angle is displayed by a connected pointer/scale measuring device (9, 10), is to be improved to the effect that no initial build up of pressure is required and that the progressive enlargement of the width of the passage for the expired air occurs not at the outlet end of the instrument but in its interior, so that given a constant size of the outlet opening from the start onwards it is not possible for the movement of the air flow to build up in the instrument. This is achieved when the housing - apart from an inserted funnel-shaped mouthpiece - is constructed in the shape of a cuboid, the openings for the inlet and outlet of the expired air are arranged in two opposite housing walls, and the swivel arm projecting into the air throughflow channel is dimensioned so large that in its starting position (zero-point position) it does not completely seal the free cross-sectional surface of the air throughflow channel.
