Digester for microbial decompsn. of organic substances. The digester comprises a transportable, thermally insulated vessel contg. a recuperative heat exchanger to collect heat arising from the decompsn. The exterior of the vessel is equipped with a quick action coupling with which the heat exchanger can be joined to a pipe circuit intended to utilise recuperated heat. The vessel is cylindrical and rotatable about its central longitudinal axis which is pref. horizontal or slightly inclined to the horizontal. Pref. the vessel can be removably mounted on supporting rollers of which one or more is power-driven to rotate the vessel. The frame in which the rollers are fitted can pref. be raised at one end by a power cylinder in order to tilt the axis of the vessel. The recuperative heat exchanger pref. comprises a water circuit including spaced, cylindrical jacket spaces concentric with the axis of the cylindrical vessel. The walls of each jacket space directly contact decomposing material within the vessel. Semi-continuous heat prodn. by substituting freshly charged vessel for one contg. spent material. Rotary vessel provides efficient agitation with lower energy consumption than rotary agitator in stationary vessel.
