The rubber hoses of the engine cooling system of a motor vehicle are liable to suffer damage by small predatory animals such as stone-martens, which use convenient spaces in the engine bay as living quarters. Such damage is prevented by filling the vacant spaces in the engine bay with inserts (8) with frames made of wire and covered with netting wire with a mesh size of about 5 cm. The inserts may be attached to the wall of the engine bay or they may be attached to the bonnet lid.
