An electromagnetic filter with a high field gradient for extracting particles suspended in a fluid, comprising a vessel 2 in which the fluid laden with particles travels, the vessel being provided with an entry 4 and an exit 6. The filter comprises means 1 which make it possible to create inside the vessel 2 magnetic field gradients oriented transversely and capable of entraining the particles towards the inner wall of this vessel, where they form a slurry. The vessel having a plane of symmetry, the entry 4 and the exit 6 of the fluid taking place on either side of this plane, the vessel comprising a partition 12 in this plane of symmetry so as to obtain two chambers E1, E2, the filter additionally comprising a set of conduits capable of bringing the entry 4 and the exit 6 into communication by a system of entry and exit openings 22, 25 so as to lengthen the path of the fluid in the vessel 2.
