A process and device for determining the chemical oxygen demand of waste waters, wherein hydrogen peroxide is used as the oxidant and the oxidation is carried out at an elevated temperature, in the range from 40 to 240 DEG C, in the presence of an ultraviolet light source, but otherwise in the dark. The device comprises a receptacle 1 for the water whose chemical oxygen demand is to be determined, a reservoir 2 for the hydrogen peroxide, a receptacle for the cleaning liquid 3, pumps 4, 5 and 6, a feed line 7 into a closed reactor 8 supplied with ultraviolet light, a cooling device 9, a polarographic measuring device 10 and a computer-microprocessor unit 11.
