An apparatus and process for tanning and/or dyeing leather utilises a stainless steel drum (1) the contents of which are not visible during processing. The float level in the drum is monitored by reference to the combined outputs of load sensors on which the drum is mounted. The drum includes a pumping chamber which fills in one angular position and discharges in another higher position to cause liquid to circulate through the drum and piping system connected about shafts (12).
