PURPOSE:To obtain a highly viscous, hardly inflammable and lowly volatile liquid paraffin by purifying the paraffin enough to pass three purity tests and specifying the viscosity and flash point of the paraffin. CONSTITUTION:A residue of atmospheric crude oil distillation is subjected to vacuum distillation. The residue of the vacuum distillation is used as the raw material to be subjected to solvent deasphalting, and the deasphalted oil is extracted with an aromatic selective solvent to obtain a raffinate. The raffinate is then subjected to solvent dewaxing and contact dewaxing. The dewaxed oil is subjected to the 1st hydrorefining in the presence of Ni-Mo, Co-Mo, Ni-Co-Mo or Ni-W catalyst, followed by vacuum distillation to remote light components therefrom. Then, the oil is passed through the 2nd hydrorefining stage in the presence of a catalyst containing reduced nickel to thereby obtain liquid paraffin with a viscosity (at 40 deg.C) of 300mm2/s or more and a flashing point of 280 deg.C or higher, which is pure enough to pass purity tests (tests according to the Japanese pharmacopoeia, the Japanese food additive standard, and the Japanese cosmetics ingredients regulations).
