PURPOSE:To simplify the circuit by installing a multi-phase inverter forming an arm which consists of switching elements connected to phase windings connected circularly and controlling the currents of said phase windings to a command value. CONSTITUTION:The phase coils Aphi-Ephi of a hybrid five-phase stepping motor 1 are connected circularly at connection points (a)-(e). A driving circuit 2 consists of an inverter circuit comprising five pairs of switching elements S1-S10, the elements of each of the pairs being connected in series and the five pairs being connected in parallel. The connection points a'-e' of the switching elements S1-S10 are connected to the connection points (a)-(e) of the coils respectively and electric power is supplied from a DC power source E to the driving circuit 2. The differences between the command value from a current command generator 3 and the actual currents iA-iE are detected by a current controller 4, control the gates of the switching elements S1-S10 through a PWM gate pulse generation circuit 5, and turn the switching elements S1-S10 on and off.
