PURPOSE:To execute the partial gradation change of a picture or the change of an aperture characteristic quickly at real time so that favorable picture quality can be obtained by providing plural stages of changing means for obtaining the picture data of different gradation or of different aperture charac teristic, and selecting one of those for every designated area of a picture. CONSTITUTION:The picture to be a processed object is prescanned by a picture reading part 10, and read picture data is stored in a frame buffer 32. This picture data is displayed on a monitor 36. An operator designates an area whose gradation is to be changed and the gradation of this area as seeing the pattern of the picture displayed on the monitor 36. This designating operation is executed by an operating key 34, and area designation data is supplied to the picture reading part 10, and the area designation data is inputted to the decoder 22 of a gradation changing part 12. Thus, the partial gradation change of the picture or the change of the aperture characteristic is executed quickly at real time, and the favorable picture quality is obtained.
