PURPOSE:To provide the title composition useful as an anticonvulsant, containing, as active ingredient, 1-methyl-1-benzyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline or salt thereof. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition containing, as active ingredient, a compound of the formula, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, or salt thereof. The present composition is useful as a medicine for the prevention and therapy of nerve degeneration and/or nerve necrosis under such pathological conditions as cerebral ischemia in the case of cardiac standstill or cerebral apoplexy, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, epilepsia and injury; in addition, being expected as a medicine for the prevention and therapy of Alzheimer' s disease. Huntigton's chorea, Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular dementia, sleep disorder, schizophrenia, melancholia, anxietas, etc.
