PURPOSE:To obtain KOSAN (rhizome of Panax ginseng) having high quality and excellent preservability and useful as a crude drug, in a short time at a low cost, by heat-treating tissue culture product of medicinal ginseng at a high temperature and drying the product at a temperature lower than the heat- treatment temperature. CONSTITUTION:Callus produced by the tissue culture of medicinal ginseng (e.g. Panax ginseng, Panax japonicum, Panax quinquefolium, etc.) is proliferated by liquid cultivation or solid cultivation process. After removing excess water from the culture product if necessary, the produce is heat-treated at 70-110 deg.C for 0.5-6hr (preferably 1-3hr) and then dried with hot air at 40-60 deg.C for 6-24hr to obtain the objective KOSAN. EFFECT:Since the water exisiting in the cultured medicinal ginseng can be removed effectively in a short time, the growing of mold can be inhibited. The product has excellent preservability because of its hard and dense structure. The drying can be carried out without using particular apparatus such as freeze- drying apparatus.
