PURPOSE:To prevent oscillation and bending due to cutting of a band saw cutter and improve cut surface precision by carrying out the cutting work for a work by carrying out the optimum positioning by detecting the height of each movable vice jaw of an upper part saw tooth guide and a body vice, according to the dimesion of a work, by a position detector installed on the upper part saw tooth cutter guide and carrying out cutting work for the work. CONSTITUTION:A position detector 51 (light receiving and emission type photoelectric tube) for detecting the position of an upper part saw tooth guide 49B according to a work W is installed at the position opposed to the fixed vice jaw 13 of a body vice 9 of the upper part saw tooth guide 49B. Further, a detecting member 53 (encoder 55) for detecting the shift distance in the vertical direction is installed. The vertical shift of the upper part saw tooth guide 49B is carried out by a cylinder 61. While, the vertical shift of the movable vice jaw 15 of a fixed vice is carried out by a motor 75 through the screwing of the back side of a jaw body 65 with a screw shaft 71. Accordingly, the upper part saw tooth guide and the movable vice jaw are moved, suppressing the interference between both, and the supporting point distance of a band saw cutter can be set according to the work.
