PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber bundle having a high tensile strength and elongation without defects of superficial streaky disorder in the ruptured surface, by extruding a solution of an acrylonitrile type polymer into a coagulation bath at a a specific draft, washing the extruded fibers with water by using a rotating guide roller, drawing the fibers to give precursor fibers for the carbon fibers, and calcining the resultant precursor fibers. CONSTITUTION:An acrylonitrile type polymer is dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide, etc. to give a solution, which is then extruded into a coagulation bath at substantially =5.0 draft and spun into fibers. The wet extruded fibers are then washed with water by using a rotating guide roller, drawn, etc. and dried to form precursor fibers for carbon fibers. The resultant precursor fibers are then calcined to give the aimed fiber bundle consisting of a carbon fiber bundle having at least 1,000 fibers and at least 70% fibers, constituting the fiber bundle, and having no defect of superficial streaky disorder (A), (B) nor (C), stuck material (D), broken flaw (E), void (F), etc.
