PURPOSE:To easily refine an alloy consisting of Ti-Al-base intermetallic compound by refining an Al-Ti master alloy with a specific composition by the use of a high purity-burnt calcia crucible and carrying out melting by further blending Ti with the above master alloy so that the prescribed composition is obtained. CONSTITUTION:At the time of refining an intermetallic compound-type alloy having a specific composition consisting of 50 atomic % (64wt.%) Ti and the balance 50 atomic % Al, first a master alloy having a composition consisting of 60-85wt.% Al and the balance Ti is melted in a vacuum or inert-gas atmosphere by an induction heating method by using a burnt calcia crucible in which CaO content, SiO2 content, and coefficient of water absorption are regulated to 98%, 0.5%, and 10%, respectively, so as to be formed into an Al-Ti master alloy. Then, Ti is added to an ingot of the above master alloy so that an intermetallic compound the prescribed composition is formed, or further, one or more kinds among ductility-improving elements, such as B, Fe, Mn, and Cr, are added by =10 atomic %, which is remelted by means of the same crucible, atmosphere, and heating method as mentioned above. By this method, the Ti-Al-base intermetallic compound-type alloy of the prescribed composition can be produced.
