PURPOSE:To efficiently, inexpensively and catalytically reduce ferric ion in an iron-based acidic soln. to ferrous ion with gaseous H2 by using a catalyst obtained by depositing a specified catalytic component on an acid-resistant carrier of activated carbon or silica. CONSTITUTION:The grains of Pt and/or Pd of =150Angstrom as the catalytic component are highly dispersively deposited on an acid-resistant carrier of activated carbon or silica so that the amt. of the component is controlled to 0.01-20wt.% based on the carrier to produce the catalyst. The ferric ion in an iron-based acidic soln. is catalytically reduced to ferrous ion by using the catalyst. In addition, 0.01-1wt.% of the catalyst based on the soln. is used in the catalytic reduction when the suspension-type catalytic reduction method is used, and the reduction temp. is appropriately controlled to 30-90 deg.C and the hydrogen pressure to ordinary pressure to 15kg/cm2G. The ferric ion concn. in a liq. such as plating soln. is inexpensively and stably controlled in this way.
