LIQUEFACTION OF WOODEN BIOMASS

PURPOSE:To safely and easily liquefy wooden biomass without using any reducing gas while using N2, etc. by heating it at a temp. within a specified range under the pressure of an inert gas in the presence of an aq. medium in alkaline conditions. CONSTITUTION:Wooden biomass such as wood chip, wood flour or bark is mixed with an aq. medium and an alkaline material such as NaOH and the resulting mixture is put into a pressure vessel, pressurized with an inert gas such N2 and heated at 200-400 deg.C. It is possible to safely and easily liquefy the biomass without using a conventional reducing gas such as CO or CO+H2 as pressurizing gas, white using water as a reaction medium.
