PURPOSE: To obtain a polyarylsulfone which has improved chemical resistance, stability against thermal oxidation, and thermal deformation temp. by reacting a dihydric phenol with a specified monomer. ;CONSTITUTION: A dihydric phenol represented by formula I (R1 and R2 represent a 1 to 4C alkyl or a halogen; a and b are 1 to 4; W represents a 2 to 10C alkylidene, a 4 to 12C cycloalkylene, a 4 to 12C cycloalkylidene, -S-, -S-S-, -O- or the like; and c is 0 or 1) is reacted with a monomer represented by formula II (X represents a halogen) in the presence of a base (e.g. K2CO3) in an amt. of not less than 2 mol. eq. in a polar aprotic solvent (e.g. dimethylacetamide) and a cocatalyst (e.g. toluene) at 110 to 190°C while distilling- off water being produced.
