PURPOSE:To prevent a stamp shadow from being formed and to detect only foreign matter, dust, and a defect even when a binary-coded image of a stamped surface is picked up by installing an image sensor perpendicularly to the tablet surface and providing a scattering plate which is so shaped as to cover the tablet surface. CONSTITUTION:The tablet 1 which is mounted on a conveyance system 11 moves as shown by an arrow. The tablet 1 at a photography position right below the scattering plate 13 in a flower pot shape is photographed by a two-dimensional CCD camera 15 through the window 16 at the peak part of the scattering plate 13, its image 17 is sent to a frame memory 19, and a defect decision unit 20 makes a defect decision, so that a suction type defective tablet removing mechanism 12 removes a defective tablet. The window 16 of the scattering plate 13 is large enough just to put a tablet when viewed from the camera 15 and the bottom part of the flower pot has a milk- white internal surface and a black external surface. Consequently, dust and foreign matter are seen as dark spots even on the stamped surface of the tablet in the binary- coded image which is picked up by the camera 15 and the part other than the tablet becomes solid black, so that the dust and foreign matter in the tablet are easy to detect.
