PURPOSE: To prepare a catalyst for methanol synthesis and alcohol decomposition by mixing each specified amt. of soluble salts or soluble complexes of copper, aluminum, and zinc to obtain a coprecipitate, and then washing, drying and calcining the coprecipitate. CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. (A) of a compd. selected from alkali metals and ammonium ion components is prepared. An aq. soln. (B) of soluble salts or soluble complexes of copper, aluminum and zinc is prepared with the atomic ratios of 0.20 to 2.10 Cu+Zn/Al and 0.10 to 1.50 Zn/Al. The aq. solns. (A) and (B) are introduced into a reactor to react under conditions of pH 6.3 to 7.3 at 45 to 65 deg.C for 0.1 to 60 min residence time to obtain a coprecipitate. The obtd. coprecipitate is separated by filtering, washed with water, dried at 50 to 200 deg.C and calcined at 250 to 500 deg.C to obtain a catalyst for methanol synthesis and alcohol decomposition.
