PURPOSE:To obtain the titled adsorbent having large adsorbing capacity and useful for the purification of gas, by using the residue obtained by a method wherein coal ground so as to have a proper particle size is subjected to heat treatment at specific temp. under a liquefying condition and the liquefied substance is extracted and removed by an org. solvent. CONSTITUTION:Coal is ground to a proper particle size and subjected to heat treatment under the pressure of hydrogen without using a solvent or in a solvent such as anthracene or subjected to heat treatment in a hydrogen donating solvent such as hydrogenated anthracene and a coal tar solvent at 350-480 deg.C for a short time under a liquefying condition. The liquefied substance is extracted and removed by an org. solvent such as benzene. Thus obtained extraction residue is a porous adsorbent having large adsorbing capacity and melecular sieve action with a suppressed particle size and useful for the purification and recovery of gases. This method is more excellent than a gas activation method in such a point that the titled adsorbent is easily obtained.
