Preparation of porous silica beads comprises: (1) mixing a liquid mixture containing an alkoxysilane and a 1-alkylamine with an aqueous acid solution, with stirring; (2) reacting the mixture to give a composite of silica particles with 1-alkylamine; (3) drying the composite; and (4) removing the 1-alkylamine by thermal treatment. An Independent claim is also included for porous silica beads, which have a diameter of 5-300 microns and consist of a porous aggregate of numerous fine silica particles with an average pore diameter of 0.5-5 nm.
