Compression-stress generation system in rail foot - upsets rail head during cold-rolling when straightening

Compression stresses are generated in rail feet by cold-rolling when straightening. This upsets the rail head and stretches the foot, without affecting straightness of the rail. During heat-treatment, the rail head can be heated to over 600 deg.C. for subsequent bending. The consequent reduced resistance of the rail to shaping results in very small residual tension stresses in the foot.
